1. Before surgery

When surgery is recommended, it’s normal for doubts, concerns, and many questions to arise. Good preparation before the procedure is essential so that the entire process unfolds in an orderly, safe, and predictable way.

In this section you will find practical information on what to keep in mind before surgery, what the usual steps are, who to contact, and what to expect on the day of the procedure and during the period afterward.

Scheduling the surgery

Once the doctor indicates the need for surgery, it is important to contact the administrative team that supports the surgeon to begin the corresponding arrangements.

This process includes, among other aspects:

  • Coordination of the surgery date
  • Operating room reservation
  • Organization of the surgical team
  • Administrative procedures with private health plans or insurance providers
  • Required authorizations and documentation

The administrative team is responsible for guiding you through each step and handling all of these procedures, answering your questions and supporting you so that the process moves forward in the most efficient and organized way possible.

Preoperative assessment

The preoperative assessment is a medical evaluation carried out before surgery. Its goal is to confirm that the patient is in suitable condition for the procedure and to plan anesthesia safely.

To schedule it, the patient must contact the Hospital Italiano Preoperative Assessment Department by calling (011) 4959-0200, where the corresponding appointments will be assigned.

What does the preoperative assessment include?

  • Clinical evaluation
  • Laboratory tests
  • Additional tests as needed, depending on the case
  • Anesthesiology evaluation

The patient may bring studies previously performed at another institution or center, and may also complete any requested tests within the hospital.

It is important to know that preoperative tests are not the same for all patients. They are indicated on an individual basis, taking into account:

  • Medical history
  • Age
  • Regular medications
  • The type of surgery to be performed (simpler or more extensive procedures)

During this evaluation, the patient will be informed whether they need to:

  • Stop or adjust any medication
  • Fast
  • Follow any special preparation before surgery

What to ask before surgery?

Before surgery, it is advisable to have some questions clear. You can write them down and bring them to your appointment. Some helpful suggestions include:

  • What does the surgery involve and how long does it take?
  • Does the surgery require hospitalization, or is it outpatient?
  • What is the estimated recovery time?
  • What discomfort is to be expected during the postoperative period?
  • When can I return to my usual activities?
  • What warning signs should I watch for after discharge?
  • Will there be follow-up appointments, and when?

There are no “wrong” questions. Being well informed helps you go through the process with greater peace of mind
