2. Day of surgery

Before the day of the procedure, the administrative staff will contact you to inform you of:

  • The time you need to arrive
  • The exact location within the hospital

Hospital admission

If the surgery requires hospitalization, upon arrival you will need to complete the admission process at Patient Admissions. Then, the hospital staff will indicate the next steps to follow.

You will be taken to a room or assigned area to:

  • Change clothes
  • Leave your belongings with your family members or companions

Afterwards, you will go down to the surgical preparation area, where you will be received by:

  • Nursing staff
  • Anesthesiology team
  • Surgical team

They will accompany and assist you until you enter the operating room.

IMPORTANT: preoperative fasting

For surgery and anesthesia to be performed safely, it is essential to follow the fasting instructions. Not following the fasting instructions may require the surgery to be rescheduled for safety reasons.

GENERAL FASTING RECOMMENDATIONS

(based on guidelines from the American Society of Anesthesiologists and adopted in routine practice)

  • Solids and dairy:
Minimum fasting of 8 hours before surgery
  • Clear liquids:
Allowed up to 2 hours before the indicated time
Examples: water, tea or coffee without milk, clear drinks without pulp
  • These are not considered clear liquids:
milk, yogurt, juices with pulp, alcohol

These instructions may vary depending on the type of surgery, the anesthesia, and your medical history. The medical team or the preoperative assessment department will let you know if you need any special instructions.

During and after surgery

Once the surgery is completed, you will go to an anesthesia recovery room, where you will remain under observation until you are fully awake and stable.

The surgeon will inform both the patient and their family members or companions about how the procedure went.
